What can hydrotherapy do for me?

Water is the source of life, we start life surrounded by it in our mother's womb. Submerging our body in water has many health benefits.

  • Hydrostatic pressure reduces swelling and acts as a compression device.

  • Helps increase breathing capacity out of the water.

  • Helps dull the nerve endings to relieve pain.

  • Increases circulation.

  • Warm water is calming and has a relaxing effect for muscles and the nervous system.

  • Water supports our joints to move more freely (land based, weight bearing movement may cause pain).

Whether you bathe in a bath, a pool, the sea, or a hot tub, being in water is not just beneficial for our body, it's very calming for the mind too.

Hydrotherapy may be used for a multitude of reasons.

  • Improve range of movement, helping to reduce risk of injuries.

  • Improve strength, balance and mobility .

  • Rehabilitation from an injury or surgery.

  • It's lots of fun!

By working with a certified practitioner, you can be confident that your safety is paramount and that your needs and abilites will be cared for.

When looking for someone to give you hydrotherapy, here are some things you may want to think about:

  • Make sure they are qualified to work with someone with your health condition or limitations (some people should be referred to their specialist before starting hydrotherapy).  The hydro therapist should be able to provide you with a copy of their qualifications ans disclosure, particularly if working with vulnerable adults.

  • The hydro therapist should be adequately insured.

  • Ask them for references.  You should feel confident that the hydro therapist has the relevant experience and ability to work with you.

  • Have an initial meeting, either in person or via zoom, you need to feel safe and comfortable with them.  The therapist my need to use a hands on approach to support you whilst you are in the water, you need to feel comfortable being touched by them.
